Easy Ways to Love Self Isolation with your Partner

Self isolation is the new normal. Welcome! Maybe you and your partner are self-isolating together while working from home, or many not working at all. Either-way, self isolation is probably more time than you’ve ever spent with your boyfriend, wife, or partner than you’ve spent together before. Here are some ways we’re not only keeping our sanity, but strengthening our relationship as well, especially if you’re in a one-bedroom apartment.

Give each other space while self isolating

This is a common theme. Everyone is used to having some alone time, that’s more than just when you go to brush your teeth. Carve out some ways to do things you both enjoy on your own time. For those of us used to going to an office or being on the road, self isolation is a drastic change. Sometimes, we just need our own space.

It will help you keep your sanity, but also give you something to talk about when you are spending time together.

Take turns in each room

Not only is spending time in separate rooms a smart idea since you’re socially distancing from one another, but it gives you time to feel alone because nobody wants to feel like they are never alone. Having a schedule will also give you time to be alone with your thoughts and do your own thing. Having a schedule may also give you a better sense of routine and nomality during self isolation.

Get caught up on all the content you’ve been missing out on

You each have your own show you’ve been meaning to watch, YouTube videos to binge, books to read, and podcasts you’ve been meaning to listen to (I can’t wait to finally listen to the second season of Serial). Don’t watch everything together always. This way you will have separate experiences each day and can actually have new stuff to talk about.

Surprise your partner

Get up early and make them coffee (or breakfast in bed). Doing stuff like this makes it feel more like a choice to be home, and not like you have to be home. Astronaut Chris Hadfield says to treat isolation like an expedition.

Truly unplug during self isolation

Take a break from the media if it is making you upset or anxious. It will change your mood and your partner will thank you. It’s important to stay on top of everything, but you’ll be much happier if you don’t have the news on 24/7. It’s been linked to causing stress and anxiety, and just being generally bad for your mental health.

Have a board game night!

Board same nights are almost always fun. Either playing a classic board game like we recommended in our top Toronto date night ideas. The thing is though, I don’t remember the last time I played one. Odds are you have a bunch of games you haven’t played in ages, or bought but never played, it can be a good opportunity to kill time, and sort through things you’ve been “saving for the cottage”.

Bonus points for having sexy consequences!

Teach each other something new

Teach each other something. It could be a riddle, a song, cooking an old family recipe , or a silly game from when you were a kid. It’s always fun to learn something new, especially if it comes from someone you love. If you have nothing but time to kill while self isolating, make it a brain buster!

Have your own private conversations during self isolation

Let them have private conversations. Normally if a text goes off or your partner laughs you want to say “who’s that?” or “what’s funny?”. Let that go in times like these. Normally it wouldn’t matter but this goes back to not feeling like you have any time for yourself. Not even in a separate conversation.

Selfishly, you’ll appreciate it too when your group chat gets silly over Tiger King.

Give your partner a guys or girls night out while self isolating

Encourage your partner to have FaceTime drinks with their friends. Give them the couch and you can be the bartender. You are not involved. Hand off the drinks and let them be loud and silly while you chill in the bedroom.

Something fun my wife and I are doing is wrapping up the day at 6pm by putting on our formal clothes and making each other a nice drink.

Open up your own restaurant Chez Self Isolation

Not just making your own bread, I’m sure you have a neighbour or a friend you can pick up a half-loaf from, but all of those recipes you’ve been saving and meaning to try for some time. Try crazy hard recipes that you “never had the time” to attempt.

Then enjoy a romantic dinner together. You can even take turns playing restaurant, by making the best meal you can with the ingredients you have.

Exercise together

Remember the freshman 15 you put on at college or university? I hate to break it to you, but not leaving your house
Go for a socially distant walk, run, or bike ride together if it is nice out. If it isn’t, do a free online workout class. From prisoner’s workout to yoga classes, there are lots of easy ways to stay fit – or get fit during quarantine. Many services, including Peloton are offering free access to their workout videos.

Matty Matheson Lasagna – Unforgettable Date Night Recipe and Review

Looking for your next date night recipe? If you want to stay in, you can’t for wrong with a great lasagna. A couple years ago, Matty Matheson came out with his now-famous get you laid Lasagna. He recently updated the recipe on his YouTube channel. In this post, we take a look at both and will update the post with a review of what we think is the best Matty Matheson lasagnas.

How to make Matty Matheson’s “Guaranteed To Get You Laid” lasagna for your next date night

This is the original Matty Check out the video below. We’ve also grabbed the ingredient list from the original post on Vice to make it easy for you if you already have an idea of how to make lasagna. If you want the step by step directions as well, they’re in the original vice post.

Ingredients make Matty Matheson’s “Guaranteed To Get You Laid” lasagna

Check your fridge and pantry for these, and grab the rest from your local farmers market/butcher/bakery/grocery store.

  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 4 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup good olive oil
  • 1 head of garlic
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 3 tablespoons dried red chilies
  • 1 liter beef stock
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 bunch parsley
  • 1 box of oven ready lasagna noodles
  • 3 pounds shredded mozzarella
  • 250-gram wedge of Parmesan cheese

Naughty or Nice Chorizo Lasagna to get nice before you get naughty on your next date night

On his new YouTube channel, Just a Dash, Matty Matheson revisited lasagna, this time making a naughty or nice chorizo (sausage) lasagna. This one is served with a salsa verde. You can’t go wrong with anything Matty Matheson makes, but the salsa verde takes the classic lasagna, and your next date night to a whole new level.

Ingredients you need to make Matthy Matheson’s Naughty or Nice Chorizo Lasagna

One thing you’ll notice about the naughty or nice lasagna is that there are fewer ingredients, making it in our opinion, easier to cook. You have enough on your plate most date nights, no need to make it more complex than it already is. It also seems like the ingredients are a little bit more accessible to what we normally keep in our kitchen – or if your date night is at their place.

  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • 2 lbs. fresh chorizo sausage meat
  • 1 1/2 cup tomato puree, divided
  • 2 cup beef stock
  • 2 cup ricotta
  • 1 cup queso fresco
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup grated parmesan
  • 1 tsp fresh ground pepper
  • 16-20 uncooked lasagna noodles
  • 2 cup grated mozzarella cheese

Ingredients for the salsa verde

This might be the secret weapon of this dish – especially for your next date night. You can add this salsa verde to any lasagna dish. If you’re taking a shortcut and ordering in or cooking one from frozen, this gives your lasagna a touch of sophistication.

  • 1 jalapeno, finely chopped
  • 1/2 chopped cilantro
  • 1/2 cup chopped mint
  • 1/4 cup green onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • zest and juice of 1 lime
  • 3/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp fresh ground pepper

Matty Matheson Lasagna review

We haven’t had a chance to make either lasagna yet, let alone both side by side to compare, but if we had to choose, which we do, we would pick the naughty or nice.

  1. Good chorizo is so underrated. You can get just about any flavour or spice you’d like. It’s also typically fairly cheap to source from most butcher shops
  2. Less is more. At least when it comes to ingredients and you don’t have a full pantry.
  3. The salsa verde is what takes it to a whole new level. If you’re using milder chorizo add a bit more jalapeno. Spicer chorizo? use the salsa verde to cool your mouth and balance it out.

Final thoughts on making Matty Matheson Lasagna

You’ll notice Matty Matheson doesn’t measure too much when he is cooking, instead, he is always tasting! If you’re making your own dish, keep tasting as you go. And start with decent quality ingredients.

Date Night In Home Made BBQ Pizza

9 Date Night Meals To Make At Home

There’s just something more romantic about staying in and making a beautiful meal with your partner. You’re working together, have lots of chances to be playful, and you’re on your home turf. No need to worry about drinking and driving or surged Uber prices. No pours of wine that feel a little short either. These are our go-to recipes for a night in.

1. Caprese Salad

There is something fun about a Caprese salad. Bright red tomato and lush green basil contrasting against fresh white mozzarella and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. Not only is a Caprese salad a classier way to start a night then a Cesear or cobb salad, but it is also more versatile as well. Perfect for a snack on a picnic or the start of a five-course meal in.

Check out this simple Caprese salad recipe.

2. Cream of Broccoli and Cheddar Soup

Soups are a great way to warm up on a cold winter night. If you’re having a steak night, why not start the night off with some homemade cream of broccoli and cheddar soup?

The best part is there is an easy shortcut to making homemade soups – you can make them in many premium blenders! We like this recipe from Vitamix.

3. Backyard Wood Oven Fire Pizza

Maybe you have a grand outdoor kitchen including an Italian brick wood oven fire pizza oven. If you don’t have a bazillion dollar budget, check out a BBQ pizza stone which lets you cook a pizza on your BBQ. If you have a charcoal BBQ, add some wood that that kiss of smoke only a wood oven pizza has.

Make it a game by making each other’s pizza with a recipe from Weber BBQs. As a bonus, try baking a homemade loaf of bread on the grill as an appetizer.

4. Matty Matheson’s Get You Laid Lassana

Layer upon layer of goodness. Unless you grew up in an Italian bakery, this is way better than anything you ate as a kid (apologies to all the chain restaurants with lasagna on the kid’s menu). Here is the full recipe for Matty Matheson’s Get You Laid Lassana.

5. Roll Each Other Up… A Burrito

Look out Taco Tuesdays, sometimes, it’s more fun to roll it up. The challenge of the perfect burrito roll, the surprise, the theme, and even making your own homemade chips and salsa.

And while it might be a weird flex, there is something about mastering the perfect burrito roll.

6. What’s more summer than a BBQ Burger?

Skip the frozen patties and go for something fresh. If you’re going to go fresh, go all the way, and grind your own meat to make the freshest burger you’ve ever had.

Spice it up with these jalapeno garlic homemade ground burgers, and for the chef secret? Cook it in a cast iron pan, even if you’re grilling it outside.

7. Is there anything sweeter than homemade cookies?

What’s the best part about making your own soft-baked cookies? Eating the raw cookie dough. Make a little mess in the kitchen and have the perfect dessert. Make a homemade ice cream sandwich with your partner’s favourite ice cream or pack them in their bag for a snack with a love note.

 8. Brunch the next day.

You made the lasagna right? If you did, you probably had a late-night making it time for brunch. Quick, simple, and elegant, you can make Gordon Ramsay’s scrambled eggs the centrepiece to any day after meal.
